Org. Setting and Reporting

The duration of an ESCWA internship is normally two months on a full time basis - this may be exceptionally extended for a maximum period of six months. It is awarded on the recommendation of the Director of the respective Division.

Interns are not paid and are responsible for all expenses related to the internship.

ESCWA accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during an internship. Therefore, upon awarding an internship, candidates will be required to sign a statement confirming their understanding and acceptance of the conditions of service.

This internship is located within the Library, Conference Services Section (CSS), Administrative Services Division (ASD) of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia. The intern reports directly to the Library Chief, and will be under the overall supervision of the Chief of CSS.

Responsibilities

The intern will be responsible for carrying out the following: (TOR)

1. Participate in day-to-day service delivery: main duties will involve issues desk work including enquiries, shelving, processing new books and journals, and a variety of other clerical tasks.
2. Participate in several library review projects, e.g. :
• UNDOCS: verifying printed vs electronic on UN Online Document System http://documents.un.org
• ESCWA docs: checking and updating on Library system (OLIB) http://olib.escwa.org.lb/eolib24/w21.bat
3. Assist staff in providing reference services staff and the public by mail, by telephone, and in person.
4. Updating list of Journals, related websites..etc
5. Assist in reviewing and developing Library web presence (Internet and Intranet)
6. Cataloging online books and reports (e.g. Arab Advisory Group reports).

Education

The following criteria are used to determine eligibility for the ESCWA Internship Programme:
1. Applicants are enrolled in a Library science degree programme in a graduate school (second university degree or higher) at the time of application and during the internship;
2. Applicants pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree.
3. The area of study of the prospective intern is related to the functional areas of ESCWA’s programme of work and administration (Library and information Science)

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. Arabic is also a working language of ESCWA. For this post, fluency in written and spoken English is required. Knowledge of Arabic is desirable.
