Org. Setting and Reporting

This internship is located within the Social Policy Section, Social Development Division (SDD) of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia. The intern reports directly to the Chief, Social Policy Section and will be under the overall supervision of the Director of SDD.
The Social Policy Section conducts regional research and provides advisory services to the governments of member countries in the areas of provision of social services and social protection, disability policy and labour markets including employment and wages.
The duration of an ESCWA internship is normally two months on a full time basis –this may be extended for a maximum period of six months. It is awarded on the recommendation of the Director of the respective Division.
ESCWA accepts no responsibility for all expenses related to the internship.
ESCWA accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during an internship. Therefore, upon awarding an internship, candidates will be required to sign a statement confirming their understanding and acceptance of the conditions of service.

Responsibilities

Depending on the experiences of the intern and the needs of the section, the intern will undertake the following assignments during the period of his/her internship:
1. Draft a substantive paper on a particular issue within the research focus of the section. This includes reviewing existing literature; assisting in crystallizing research questions; conducting desk research on the topic; assisting in identifying potential partners and liaise with them; and summarize the findings;
2. Assist in preparation of written outputs e.g. background papers, technical papers, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, published by ESCWA;
3. Assist in the organization of expert group meetings, conferences or workshops related to the work programme of the Social Policy Section.

Education

The following criteria are used to determine eligibility for the ESCWA Internship Programme:
1. Applicants are enrolled in a degree programme in a graduate school (second university degree or higher) at the time of application and during the internship;
2. Applicants pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree.
3. The area of study of the prospective intern is related to the functional areas of ESCWA’s programme of work and administration.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. Arabic is also a working language of ESCWA. For this post, fluency in written and spoken English is required. Knowledge of Arabic is desirable.
