Vacancy Notice No: SEARO/12/TA6 Title: Medical Officer-Acute Respiratory Infections Grade: P4 Contract type: Temporary Appointment under Staff Rule 420.4 Duration of contract: 8 months Application Deadline: 13 November 2012 Duty Station: New Delhi, India Organization unit: SE/CDS Department of Communicable Diseases (CDS) (SE/CDS) / SE/DSE Disease Surveillance and Epidemiology (SE/DSE) OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME : To support Member States in the South-East Asia Region (SEA Region) to reduce morbidity and mortality from communicable diseases, strengthen communicable disease surveillance and strengthen epidemic and pandemic preparedness and response, through implementation of the International Health Regulations, the Asia Pacific Strategy for Emerging Diseases, the Pandemic Influenza Preparedness Framework for the sharing of influenza viruses and other benefits, and other strategic initiatives for viral hepatitis and acute respiratory Infection/ acute diarrhoeal diseases. Description of duties: Under the overall guidance of Director, Communicable Diseases and supervision of Regional Adviser - Disease Surveillance and Epidemiology, the incumbent will perform the following functions: 1. Support implementation of the South-East Asia Regional Strategy for a coordinated approach to the prevention and control of acute diarrhoea and respiratory infection; including coordination with related SEARO technical units (and key stakeholders working outside of the health sector). 2. Facilitate the preparation for and organization of a meeting of the 'Regional Technical Advisory Group' (RTAG) for Integrated Control of Acute Diarrhoea and Respiratory Infections. 3. Support strengthening epidemiological and laboratory surveillance in SEA Region for acute respiratory infections and acute diarrhoeal diseases, including the identification of data to inform estimation of disease burden 4. Support activities to strengthen public health capacities for seasonal, avian and pandemic Influenza in the SEA Region, including preparedness, risk reduction, risk assessment, risk communication / behaviour change, case detection, clinical management and inter-sectoral collaboration 5. Provide support to regional implementation of the Pandemic Influenza Preparedness Framework for the sharing of influenza viruses and other benefits 6. Undertake any other duties as assigned by the Supervisor; and 7. Submit an assignment report at the end of assignment. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Education: Essential: Degree in Medicine with Master in Public Health or advance university degree in any other health related field. Desirable: Postgraduate qualification in Epidemiology or Environmental Science Competencies: 1. Communicating in a credible and effective way; 2. Knowing and managing yourself; 3. Producing results; 4. Fostering integration and team work; and 5. Respecting and promoting individual and cultural differences. Skills: Functional skills and knowledge: 1. Thorough knowledge of principles and practices of communicable disease surveillance, prevention and control. 2. Experience in planning, management and coordinating national and/or international health programmes. Other skills (e.g.IT): 1. Computer literacy, particularly with Microsoft word and Powerpoint. 2. Data management and critical appraisal skills. Experience: Essential: At least seven years experience, including three years of international experience, in the implementation of communicable disease policies and programmes. Desirable: Practical knowledge of the UN System. Ability to establish harmonius working relationships with national/international personnel Languages: Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English Annual salary: (Net of tax) USD 67,483 at single rate USD 72,467 with primary dependants Source: WHO.
